Exploring Women and Family Relationships in Digital Poetry: An Analysis of Indonesian and Indian Poems

This study explores the themes of women and family relationships in poetry published on digital platforms. Although these poems are fewer in number compared to those with political or romantic themes, they significantly contribute to enriching Indonesian literature. An analysis of two poems by Dr. Bhawani Shankar Nial, an Indian poet, found in his book titled “A Tapestry of Words,” and 2 poems by Leni Marlina and Anto Narasoma, Indonesian poets published digitally by suaraanaknegerinews.com.
They are namely “March 08,” “Father,”and “Ibu, Akar yang Menembus Batu,” and “Mama,” reveals that these poems beautifully depict the roles of women within the family and the relationships between children and parents.
Introduction
In recent years, the writing of poetry on digital platforms has flourished, with a variety of poems on numerous themes enlivening Indonesian literature. This study focuses on poems that highlight women and family relationships, an important yet less represented theme. The presence of poems from both domestic and international authors enriches Indonesian literature, particularly in the realm of poetry. Through feminist literary criticism and stylistic approaches, this study aims to analyze how these poems represent the multifaceted roles and identities of women within the family.
Literature Review
The existing literature highlights the growth of digital platforms as a medium for publishing poetry. However, there remains a gap in the exploration of poems themed around women and family relationships. This study seeks to fill this gap by providing a detailed analysis of selected poems, drawing on feminist literary criticism and stylistic analysis.
Methodology
This study employs a multifaceted approach to feminist literary criticism and a stylistic approach to analyze four selected poems:
“March 08”
“Father”
“Ibu, Akar yang Menembus Batu”
“Mama”
These poems were chosen for their thematic focus on women and family relationships. The analysis is conducted by examining the structure, style, themes, and social and cultural context of each poem.
Analysis
Poem: “March 08”
Theme and Meaning: The poem explores the identity of women in various roles such as mothers, daughters, and witnesses of history. The use of symmetry and simple language strengthens the themes and meanings, highlighting the empowerment of women and their relationship with nature.
Stylistic Devices: The poem employs metaphors, anaphora, and imagery to create a rhythmic and emphatic portrayal of women’s multifaceted identities.
Poem: “Father”
Theme and Meaning: The poem provides a deep view of the relationship between a child and a father, emphasizing the father’s role in guiding the child’s life. The narrative style and strong imagery create a vivid and profound visual impression.
Stylistic Devices: The use of narrative, imagery, and repetition highlights important stages in the child’s life and underscores the father’s guidance.
Poem: “Ibu, Akar yang Menembus Batu”
Theme and Meaning: The poem depicts the mother as a figure full of strength, love, and patience. The use of simple yet meaningful language, along with metaphor, personification, and simile, enriches the portrayal of maternal love.
Stylistic Devices: The poem uses metaphor, personification, and simile to convey the mother’s tender yet strong nature, emphasizing her role in the family.

Theme and Meaning: The poem describes the struggle, sacrifice, and love of a mother with simple yet emotionally meaningful language. It emphasizes the mother’s enduring role as a source of strength and sacrifice.
Stylistic Devices: The use of metaphor, personification, and rhetorical questions successfully conveys the deep and intimate emotions felt by the mother and her children.
Conclusion
This study shows that poems themed around women and family relationships play a crucial role in enriching Indonesian literature. Through the analysis of selected poems, it is evident that these works beautifully depict the roles of mothers, fathers, and the relationships between children and parents. These poems not only offer aesthetic beauty but also convey profound moral and social messages. By exploring themes of women and family, these poems invite readers to reflect on the vital roles of parents in daily life and the values they instill in their families. As such, these works contribute significantly to Indonesian literature, particularly in the context of digital platforms, and underscore the importance of appreciating poetry themed around women and family relationships.
