The Artistic Journey of Fauzul el Nurca: From Actor to Leader of Studio Sangkaduo, One Day Before Staging “The General” in the Digital Age

Padang, Suaraanaknegerinews.com, August 14, 2025 — Amid the relentless tide of digital entertainment—from blockbuster films to instant streaming content—live theatre continues to offer an irreplaceable experience: genuine human interaction, deep emotional resonance, and a space for collective reflection on the human condition.

Tomorrow night, Friday, August 15, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. WIB, Fauzul el Nurca—multi-talented artist and founder of Studio Sangkaduo—will perform a monologue entitled “The General” at the West Sumatra Cultural Office Auditorium in Padang.

This eve of the performance marks the culmination of months of preparation. Reflecting on his career, Fauzul shared:

“I began my artistic journey in 1982 with Teater Semut Padang, first as an actor, then expanding into directing and playwriting,” he recalled.

In December 1989, he founded Studio Sangkaduo, short for “Sanggar Kerja Kreatif” (Creative Work Studio) – “SangK2”, envisioned as an idea laboratory and creative haven for artists daring enough to push beyond the boundaries of conventional theatre.

“This is not merely a rehearsal space,” Fauzul explained. “It’s a gathering place for artists to explore new ideas, tackle social issues, and enrich our local culture.”

For him, every production must offer more than entertainment—it must provide meaning. Nature remains a primary source of inspiration, as do themes of humanity, national identity, and environmental awareness.

Originally written in 2019 as a two-character play, “The General” has been adapted into a solo performance for this staging, with a single actor portraying three distinct roles. This transformation, Fauzul said, is “not just a technical adjustment, but an artistic challenge to convey layered complexities in character.”

The narrative of “The General” centers on a high-ranking general facing a moral and emotional dilemma. Likolah Patuik, his loyal subordinate and personal masseur, becomes a mirror to his inner turmoil. The play explores tensions between authority, trust, and fear—universal struggles that resonate far beyond the military setting.

While acknowledging the dominance of instant digital entertainment, Fauzul insists that live theatre delivers something technology cannot: the shared, unrepeatable energy flowing between actor and audience. Yet he is also open to integrating technology—through live streaming and post-show online discussions—to reach wider audiences without diluting the essence of the live experience.

The production of “The General” brings together a seasoned creative team: stage manager Dadang Leona, videographers Tusriadi and Bambang Art, artistic director Joni Wahid, lighting designer Efrizal YE, and composer Hasnawi Hasan.

Building the characters in “The General” has required more than 40 years of artistic experience, combined with deep research in historical literature, political-military studies, and creative imagination. As Fauzul noted, embodying three roles in one monologue demands mastery over vocal modulation, body language, and emotional range so that audiences can follow the story seamlessly.

Beyond artistry, Fauzul believes live theatre delivers distinct benefits: it fosters empathy, invites critical reflection on values such as leadership and responsibility, and demands active audience engagement—something increasingly rare in passive digital viewing.

He hopes audiences will leave tomorrow’s performance of “The General” not only moved by the general’s struggles but also engaged in their own inner dialogue about power, loyalty, and human vulnerability. At the heart of the performance lies one line that encapsulates its message:

“Courage is the direct reflection of fear.”

For Fauzul, “The General” is more than a performance; it is a living dialogue on humanity—proof that in the digital age, the stage remains vital as both a mirror to society and a meeting place for the human spirit.

Fauzul extends his invitation to students, families, art communities, and the general public:

“Come experience the pulse of the stage. Let’s explore the emotions together, engage in dialogue through the immediacy of live performance, and make this experience truly alive and meaningful.”
