Suaraanaknegerinews.com – Ramadan in New Delhi is a time of deep spiritual reflection, community, and vibrant cultural expression. Here’s a glimpse into how this holy month is observed in the city:

The Beginning. The start of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, leading to a sense of anticipation and excitement. Then, mosques across the city make announcements, and communities prepare for a month of Fasting and prayer. In 2025, Ramadan is expected to begin around the very end of february or the start of march, but this is reliant on the moon sighting.

Sehri and Iftar. Daily life is structured around Sehri (pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (evening meal). Families rise early for Sehri, consuming nourishing food to sustain them throughout the day. Next, iftar is a time of communal gathering, with families and friends coming together to break their fast. The times for both of these meals change daily, following the suns position.

Mosques and Prayers. Mosques, particularly Jama Masjid, become centers of activity, with increased attendance for daily prayers and special Tarawih prayers at night. The atmosphere in these spaces is one of devotion and tranquility. Many people will visit the Jama Masjid, and surrounding areas, to pray during the month of Ramadan.

Community and Charity. Ramadan emphasizes acts of charity and kindness. Many individuals and organizations distribute food to the less fortunate, and there is a strong sense of community spirit. This is a large part of the Ramadan experience, with people giving to those in need.

Food and Festivities. The areas surrounding Jama Masjid and other Muslim neighborhoods transform into bustling food hubs during Iftar. Street vendors offer a wide array of delectable treats, from dates and fruits to savory snacks and rich desserts. The food that is available during this time, is a large part of the cultural experience of Ramadan in Delhi.

Cultural Vibrancy. The streets of Old Delhi, in particular, come alive with a festive atmosphere. The sights, sounds, and smells of Ramadan create a unique and memorable experience. The city shows a very different face during the month of Ramadan.

Spiritual Reflection. Beyond the communal aspects, Ramadan is a time for personal reflection and spiritual growth. Many Muslims engage in increased Quran recitation and seek to strengthen their connection with their faith. This month is very important for spiritual growth.

Laylatul Qadr. The “Night of Power” (Laylatul Qadr), believed to be when the Quran was revealed, is observed during the last ten days of Ramadan. Muslims spend these nights in intense prayer and supplication. This is a very holy time during the month.

Eid al-Fitr. The culmination of Ramadan is Eid al-Fitr, a joyous celebration marking the end of the fasting month. People dress in their finest clothes, exchange gifts, and enjoy festive meals with family and friends. This celebration is a very happy occasion.

The Spirit of Togetherness. Ramadan in New Delhi is a powerful reminder of the importance of community, compassion, and faith. It is a time when the city’s diverse Muslim population comes together to share in the blessings of this holy month. The feeling of community is very strong.

Timings and Local Customs. It’s important to remember that Sehri and Iftar timings vary daily and are based on the local sighting of the moon. Local mosques and Islamic centers provide accurate timings. Respecting local customs and traditions is important for visitors during this time.

The impact on the city. During Ramadan you will find changes to business hours in areas with large muslim populations. Also many restaurants will have special Ramadan menus. The general pace of life can change during the holy month.

A time of blessing. For those that observe Ramadan, it is a time of great blessing, and spiritual renewal. The month brings people closer to their faith, and to their communities. It is a very important time for those that observe it. (Arsiya Oganara)
