Poetry is a unique form of literature that captures deep thoughts, describes vivid scenes, and tells powerful stories through carefully chosen and artfully arranged words. It helps us explore and articulate complex emotions. Through learning and appreciating poetry, we naturally improve our language skills — including vocabulary, comprehension, and an appreciation for the nuances and rhythms of language. In today’s fast-paced world, many people find it difficult to express what’s truly in their hearts. Poetry becomes a bridge, offering us a beautiful and powerful way to share feelings that might otherwise remain unspoken. It connects hearts across cultures, ages, and experiences. In this essay, I will discuss three poems written by an Indonesian poet, Leni Marlina, that deeply reflect the bonds we form through emotions and relationships: “O Seeker of Joy” (2003), “We Shall Endure” (2014), and “Rain and the Twilight of Age” (2012). These poems were published digitally on the platform suaraanaknegerinews.com in 2025.
In the first poem, “O Seeker of Joy” (2003), Marlina illustrates the universal human longing for happiness. Through vivid imagery and profound questions, the poem shows how many people chase joy like a distant star, only to find that true happiness cannot be captured or controlled. Instead, joy must be received with patience and stillness. Marlina’s simple yet thoughtful writing invites readers to reflect on their own pursuit of fulfillment, encouraging a deeper bond with oneself and a greater appreciation of life’s fleeting, beautiful moments.

In the second poem, “We Shall Endure” (2014), Marlina emphasizes resilience and silent strength. She paints a powerful picture of those who bear burdens quietly, the invisible backbone of societies across generations. Despite being overlooked, their endurance leaves a lasting imprint on the world. With stirring language and emotional depth, Marlina calls readers to recognize and honor the sacrifices and perseverance that strengthen human connections, especially among the marginalized and unseen.
The third poem, “Rain and the Twilight of Age” (2012), offers a tender reflection on aging and memory. Using the metaphor of rain as passing time, Marlina evokes a poignant nostalgia for childhood and the bonds we share with loved ones as we grow older. The poem’s gentle rhythm and soft imagery encourage readers to treasure relationships and memories before they slip away. It reminds us that poetry not only captures feelings but also preserves the essence of our shared humanity.
In conclusion, poetry is far from being a mere collection of meaningless words. It carries deep emotions, preserves precious memories, and strengthens human connections. The three poems by Leni Marlina — “O Seeker of Joy” (2003), “We Shall Endure” (2014), and “Rain and the Twilight of Age” (2012) — show how poetry can capture the beauty of seeking, enduring, and remembering. Through poetry, we find not only a way to express ourselves but also a path to connect more deeply with others.
